Weather Station Aviation Showcase

Do you use a small airport, private landing strip, or small municipal runway?

If so, chances are high that the indicators of on-site weather conditions are minimal at best – maybe a windsock, if you’re lucky. While such basic indicators are okay if you’re on the ground, they are simply inadequate if you’re flying in. Weather changes, and after a flying day trip, conditions on the landing site can be significantly different than they were at takeoff. Your safety depends on knowing those specific conditions.

Of course, small airports (and similar) don’t typically have massive budgets for expensive, complicated weather instruments. Although expensive weather instruments have their place, the costs can be prohibitive. On the other hand, department store weather instruments might suit the needs of a gardener but can be unreliable on a larger scope (e.g., small airport).

Dyacon gives you current, site-specific conditions whenever you need them. Using DyaconLive (a service included with every weather station equipped with a cell phone), you can view aviation-specific variables such as density altitude. A network-connected webcam can be used to view the runway conditions on DyaconLive as well.

Dyacon weather stations are made in the USA and are pre-configured for aviation applications. The MS‑130 was created specifically to meet the needs of the aviation industry.

Features include:

  • Wind speed and direction
  • SMS (text message) weather reports
  • USB configuration
  • Air temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Barometric pressure
  • Modbus slave
  • Low-power operation
  • Data logger

With these stations, weather reports are provided in an easy-to-use METAR format through a simple SMS text message interface. Once the weather station is installed, you can simply send a text message request from your cell phone and receive an immediate response directly from the weather station. Each METAR report request will send an immediate message followed by updates every 15 minutes for the next two hours. Dyacon weather stations can also automatically upload to Weather Underground, which provides a graphical web interface with historical data.

The integrated cell phone and solar power capabilities allow for remote installations and easy configuration. The system requires no apps, no websites, and no computer voices. No special data logger programming is required. If you can set up your home stereo, you can install a Dyacon weather station.

Basic measurements include wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. Lightning detection is also available for safety alerts.

When combined with a Dyacon tripod, Dyacon weather stations are also portable, which allows you to relocate them for seasonal or temporary landing strips.

For the last 4 years we have been using Eugene’s system with text message access with great success. The equipment is very reliable, provides a timely and accurate transmission of important airport weather.

We at Papillon Airways, Inc. are very happy with the Dyacon weather station. It has delivered exactly what we were looking for... This has greatly improved our ability to anticipate the need to stop operations.

Despite the harsh conditions of the Washington coast, including high wind speeds and the corrosive effects of salt spray, the Dyacon system performed well throughout the year long study.
