DyaconLiveScreen2

Dyacon weather stations have always been compatible with Weather Underground. This has been a low-cost web portal option for our users, serving both their internal company needs and as a publicity tool. It has been used by our researcher customers as well as for aviation, industrial, and safety users. While useful, Weather Underground has a few drawbacks:

1) the advertisements are annoying,
2) only a few of the available Dyacon sensors are charted, and
3) there no user access controls, everything is public.

DyaconLive is a weather station web portal designed and programmed by Dyacon staff for Dyacon weather stations. It is the most exciting product we have introduced (at least to us) and we have some great plans for it. The first version was released in February 2018 and there are many enhancements that will be available in the coming months. Read More

Flight Weather Data

“Real hit with local pilots”

By | Blog, Homepage

A Dyacon weather station has been in place at the Preston, Idaho airport for several months. The news of the advisory automatic weather station has been making the rounds among the pilots that use the facility. The weather data is available by SMS text message and WeatherUnderground.

Preston likes to promote their low fuel costs in order to entice pilots to the facility. In July their fuel cost was 100 LL $4.75/gal. This draws a few pilots from the surrounding area.

While preparing to support July’s Sky’s airshow (Facebook), I received the following story:

“So far the weather station has been a real hit with the local pilots and in one case a pilot was able to get the wind speed and direction on a return flight from Driggs, Idaho and made the decision to divert to Bear Lake. Had he pressed on to Preston the situation would have been difficult. That event was on the same day that the family perished on Bear Lake. He landed 30 min before the Bear Lake tragedy.

“Just last week I was able to finally get the phone number to USU, so I am hoping they will use it …, because they had a landing incident that lead to a blown tire and [even with] the cross wind data from the Garmin 1000. I told them that we could look at the actual airport data because of your system… their ears perked up.”

What is Weather Underground?

Weather Underground is a web portal for private weather stations and commercial weather services, aggregating over 34,000 weather stations throughout the world. Your own Dyacon weather station can contribute to a community of weather observers and high-quality forecasting.

Basic Weather Underground accounts are free, and no ongoing contracts or service fees are required.

Where’s the Data?

Instrument measurements are uploaded directly from Dyacon MS-100 weather stations to your own Weather Underground account, producing specific local weather data.

Although these raw data can be downloaded for archiving and analysis (an exciting prospect for weather geeks), data are presented in chart format for clear and simple information communication.

Weather Underground Data Charts

Additional charts showing precipitation, barometric pressure, and solar radiation are shown on the Weather Underground site.

The above charts can be set to show data over daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly periods, helping you to identify long-term trends. A custom period can also be configured.

Do I Need to Hire a Programmer?

Some weather stations use complicated data loggers that require custom programming or special computer utilities to either configure the station or re-transmit the data to Weather Underground.

Dyacon MS-100 weather stations transmit the data autonomously, requiring no wires, no software, no programming, no CDs, and no special cables. All that is required is for you, the user, to create a Weather Underground account and enter your assigned station ID into the weather station control module.

(Note: If your Weather Underground account is created by the time you place your Dyacon order, we will enter the station ID for you.)

Multiple Stations

Some users may need a network of weather stations to cover their operation, but only one account is required. Additional weather stations may be added under this account.

Dyacon operates several weather stations for demonstration, testing, and temporary event support.

Station locations, titles, and status messages can all be configured separately.

My Weather Data on My Website

Hotels and resorts may be interested in bragging about the current beautiful weather conditions directly on their website.

Community service organizations, farmer associations, and road maintenance departments are also applications that may want to include specific (local) weather station data directly on their websites. Weather Underground provides several means to do this, including the following:

Stickers: In the above images, you can see a “Get Weather Sticker” link. Several bits of code can be copied and pasted to your website to provide a flash image of the weather conditions. Anyone running a blog can easily add this to their posts or introduction page.

API: More sophisticated developers can use the Weather Underground API to request specific parameters and add this to their web page in a format that matches their design.

Custom: For large commercial users and integrators, Dyacon can send data directly to the customer’s server.

I Want an App

Users with a Weather Underground account can also take advantage of Weather Underground apps for Apple, Android, Kindle, and even Roku.

Dyacon Private Weather Stations Page

You can find several examples of operating weather stations on the Dyacon Private Weather Stations page.

Additionally, Dyacon MS-100 weather stations can send SMS text message weather reports directly to your phone. This method ensures universal compatibility, low cost, and the best geographic coverage.

Is This Serious Data?

Is The Weather Channel serious about weather? Absolutely. The Weather Channel is also the owner of Weather Underground.

The quality of your own weather station data is dependent upon the grade of instrument purchased. Dyacon instruments are manufactured in the USA, using high-end sensing elements.

Additionally, Weather Underground employs quality verification algorithms to ensure that the data used for their forecasting models are accurate. Weather stations with bad parameters are eliminated from the pool. (Note: Read more about the data at the following link: http://www.wunderground.com/about/data.asp.)

For weather forecasting, the number of data points and the trends are important for accuracy and reliability. The high number of contributing stations in the Weather Underground network allows for accurate forecasting, especially when combined with the radar and satellite resources of The Weather Channel.

Getting your weather data where you need it, when you need it is a priority for many private weather station users. Several Dyacon banner images feature a text message weather report, the advantages of which I will write about in another post. However, when you have a large number of users, a web interface is preferred.

Dyacon MS-130, MS-140, and MS-150 weather stations have an integrated cell phone. Using a low-cost data plan, these units are capable of not only sending SMS text message reports to your phone, but they can also upload data to your own Weather Underground account. Data from the Newton South Dyacon weather station is available at http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=KUTNEWTO2#history. Below is a sample of the Weather Underground history page.
